Dear Parents & Caregivers,

I’m Dr. Jaqui R. Otto, a licensed psychologist at InBloom Autism Services, and I want to take a moment to talk directly to you, the parents and caregivers of a child on the autism spectrum. First, let me say this: I know this journey can feel like a rollercoaster, full of emotions, uncertainties, and tons of questions. Whether you’re navigating a new autism diagnosis, sorting through resources, juggling therapies, or wondering what the future might look like for your child, it’s completely natural to feel overwhelmed. You’re not alone in this.

Over the years, I’ve worked with many families who have walked this path, and I know how isolating and confusing it can feel at times. My goal in writing this letter is simple: to offer you some clarity and encouragement to help you move forward with confidence.

Parenthood is never easy, and raising a neurodivergent child comes with its unique challenges. But here’s something I want you to hold onto: autism is just one part of your child’s story. It doesn’t define who they are or who they will become. Your child is still the same incredible, one-of-a-kind individual they were before the diagnosis, and with your love and support, they will thrive!

You are your child’s most important advocate, and the work you’re doing now will set the stage for their incredible future. With early intervention, ongoing support, and a focus on their strengths, your child can live a life full of connection, growth, and joy. And you don’t have to do it all alone, I’m here to help!

To help you get started, I’ve compiled some practical steps and resources that will help you feel more confident and prepared for the road ahead.

1. Focus on Your Child’s Strengths and Gifts

While there are challenges associated with autism, there are also many beautiful strengths and gifts. You might already see some of these amazing qualities in your child:

  • Great attention to detail and pattern recognition
  • Strong visual-spatial skills
  • Exceptional memory and recall
  • Creative and imaginative thinking
  • Honesty and straightforwardness
  • Empathy and compassion for others
  • Intense focus and determination
  • Passion and enthusiasm for special interests

These are just a few of the remarkable and important qualities associated with autism that can become a portal to future social connections, jobs, and skills. Be on the lookout for these and other important strengths! Help your child develop their strengths by noticing them, encouraging them, and providing opportunities for them to apply them in their everyday lives.

2. Build a Network of Guides, Partners, and Resources

As you start this new and sometimes difficult journey, remember that you don’t have to do it alone! Autism can make everyday things like play dates, grocery shopping, and birthday parties challenging for both you and your child. When faced with these challenges, it might seem easier to retreat and try to cope alone.

It’s so important to remember it’s ok to ask for help! There are many resources available to help you and your child, including support groups, educational programs, and therapies. Now is the time to reach out and connect with professionals, behavior specialists, teachers, and other parents who are on the same journey! Let’s get you connected with some of them right now!

Resources: Where do I find trusted information about Autism?
Guides: How to find the right therapies and programs for your child?
Partners: How to find other parents walking the same path?

3. Remember the Importance of Hope

Finally, it’s crucial to remember that hope is a driving force that can guide and motivate you through the challenges. Hope makes all the things we’ve already talked about possible!

  • Hope allows you to envision a positive future for your child and motivates you to seek out resources, support, and interventions!.
  • Hope helps you focus on your child’s strengths and abilities and drives you to connect with professionals and other parents!
  • Hope is about pushing toward progress and celebrating small victories!

Remember, hope is not about denying the challenges but embracing the belief that your child can thrive and reach their full potential.

It’s a journey, not a destination, and you are not alone in this journey. Whether I’ve evaluated your child, you are seeking evaluation, or you just have questions and would like to ask a psychologist who works with autistic children, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’m always happy to support families on this journey in any way I can!

You can reach me by email at jaqui.o@inbloomautism.com, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jaqui R. Otto
