According to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board: “Annual nationwide demand for individuals holding BCBA or BCBA-D certification has increased each year with a 14% increase from 2022 to 2023.”

“Applied Behavior Analysis is everywhere, it’s almost like I unlocked a cheat code to life to understand behavior.” – Kelsey Proctor, BCBA | Clinical Integrity Officer

So you’re probably thinking, what does an ABA therapy career look like and how can I get started? Let’s dive right in!

First, What is ABA Therapy?

ABA therapy is based on the science of learning and behavior and is commonly used for individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental disorders. ABA techniques help us understand how behavior works, how behavior is affected by the environment, and how learning takes place.

What is a Registered Behavior Technician?

Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are professionals certified – through the BACB – in behavior analysis, i.e. the study of human behavior. RBTs implement ABA Therapy techniques directly with children and conduct their ongoing therapy sessions. So, RBTs work closely with parents and Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) to ensure that the child is reaching their goals and milestones. Click here to see the career pathway for an RBT! Also worth noting: the BCBAs are in charge of creating the treatment plan for the child and overseeing progress.

How Does an ABA Therapy Career Make a Positive Impact?

The goal of ABA therapy is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that may be harmful or affect learning. In other words, ABA helps children diagnosed with autism learn the skills they need to learn and gain independence! An ABA therapy career sounds pretty awesome, right?!
