Task Analysis in ABA Therapy
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy can transform the lives of children on the autism spectrum. At InBloom Autism Services, we ensure your child has the best therapy experience possible. Our caring, experienced therapy team incorporates evidence-based, effective methods into the therapy sessions at each of our locations. One of these methods is known as task analysis.
Understanding Task Analysis in ABA
Our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) use task analysis to enhance your child’s therapy experience. Here’s a closer look at this approach and how it’s used within ABA therapy.
Definition and Purpose
Task analysis may sound complicated, but it is simply the process of breaking up a new skill into smaller tasks. Evidence has shown that children learn best when skills are divided into achievable steps. This stepwise approach, known as task analysis, enhances learning and helps make ABA therapy more effective for kids.
Types of Task Analysis
Task analysis typically takes one of two forms. The first is sometimes referred to as “chaining.” In this type, a skill is taught in steps, with each step leading to the next, like the links in a chain. Handwashing and other important skills involving a sequence of steps may be taught in this way.
Another form of task analysis is known as “shaping.” This type involves helping a child learn a skill or a positive behavior through gradual steps. Rather than tackling a challenging skill all at once, a child starts by achieving approximations of a skill and builds toward mastery.
Application of Task Analysis in ABA Therapy
Our therapists use task analysis in a way that is both enjoyable and tailor-made to meet the needs of each child. Task analysis is one of many tools your child’s therapy team can use to ensure your child achieves the best results. By approaching new skills, one step at a time, your child can experience the joy of success and accomplishment as they learn skills they can carry throughout their life. Let’s explore some examples of task analysis in ABA therapy.
Teaching Self-Care Skills
Essential self-care skills like brushing teeth, combing hair, or washing hands can be taught by using task analysis. In the case of handwashing, a child may start by simply learning to turn on the water. Having mastered this step, other skills might include applying soap, scrubbing their hands together, rinsing them, and drying them off. In this example, task analysis is used to teach a skill in a stepwise way.
Teaching Life Skills
Task analysis can help children learn a wide variety of life skills. Joining a group in an activity is an essential skill that children on the autism spectrum may struggle with. Using task analysis, a therapist may start by prompting them to leave their chair and watch the group for one minute. The next step may be joining the activity for one minute.
Over time, a child builds up to the skill of participating in a group activity for a set time through successive approximations of that activity. Each step leads closer to the goal of mastery. This is an example of shaping. Examples of other skills that might be taught through ABA therapy using task analysis include putting on shoes, completing a project, or cleaning up toys.
Evidence-Based Outcomes
Research has shown that task analysis results in positive outcomes for children with autism. Our experienced therapists can effectively incorporate this teaching method into ABA therapy, resulting in better outcomes for children as they learn essential self-care, communication, and life skills.

Benefits of Task Analysis in ABA Therapy
Task analysis benefits children in a variety of ways, including better acquisition of skills, improved generalization, and greater independence. Let’s explore each of these.
Improved Skill Acquisition
Learning new skills can be overwhelming for children with autism. By breaking skills down into more manageable steps or stages using chaining and shaping, children can master them more quickly and effectively.
Enhanced Generalization of Skills
Generalization refers to the ability to apply a skill to various social settings. Through task analysis, children learn positive skills and behaviors that will help them thrive in many environments, including home, school, and beyond.
Increased Independence
Equipping children with the meaningful skills they need to achieve greater independence is a key focus of ABA therapy at our InBloom therapy centers. Task analysis helps children learn essential activities of daily living (ADLs) that are often needed daily throughout life. Mastering these skills enables children with autism spectrum disorder to grow in confidence and independence.
